i would say intel processor i heard amd processors get hot after awhile.
First of all i sud say dat.... Intel is 32 bit and AMD is 64 bit..
one sud not compare a 32 bit procesor with a 64 bit one..as games and other such stuffs will run faster on it.. ..it's just rocks in gaming pc's... :)
But AMD sumtimes sucks as it gets overheated too often..

i have used both intel and amd but amd gives better performance and has much more speed than intel and so also has won prize for best processor
AMD seems to be more into gaming ...atleast in india ...
Intel isnt doing anything
They're not bothered abt gaming ...they're only into EDUTAINMENT ....lol

@john:The latest Intel P4 with HT technlogy is also a 64-bit processor.
Its only that AMD made such a fuss about their 64-bit processor, just like Nvidia does for its cards.
I vote for Intel.

Its very hard to say that between intel & amd , which one is better.I hav intel p4 2.8 ghz processor in my pc but i hav worked with amd (32 bit) at one of my friend house.my pals PC worked better while playing games. Now the gaming world is madly running for AMDs..But in future.............
Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Vs. Pentium 840 EE
For single run operation the AMD system performs distinctly better (by just about 30% on average*) compared to the Intel system. But When multiple applications are running, the clear conclusion is that the Intel Pentium 840 Extreme Edition is better than AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+. This result attained by Intel's dual-core processor is particularly attributable to hyperthreading (HT) - the division of the two cores into four virtual CPU units. As a result Intel is better for multimedia where as amd is better for
gaming..since during gaming, only one programme is running at a tme.
Cpu architechture -- x86 & IA-64
Both processors are completely backward compatible. But the future of these two architechture is.... very..tricky..(i couldn't find a better word).AMD's x86 is no doubt ,run the older and recent PC applications faster than Itanium based PCs But in future(in times of UT 2016),you have to choose ur side.Microsoft has publicly announced it will port Windows XP to IA-64, but it has made no such announcement about x86.Here is the trick...the software vendor while writing new codes ,have to decide, will they support Intel, AMD, or both ? and it is a known fact that writing codes for AMD is a costlier afair.Again code density of IA 64 is very bad.(i said it was tricky).
Hammer(x86 based system) and Itanium(IA-64 based system) are complete opposites when it comes to re-ordering instructions to improve overall efficiency and utilization of internal chip resources.IA 64 do not reorder.IA64 will do what they are told to do by
the compilers while executing some codes but Hammers will locate the lack in compiled output.
Now,the million doller question is-WHO WILL GROW ? Intel will give you programs which will give you complete control over branch prediction and hinting. It uses a very original and unique(i didn't find explained details about this anywhere) branch prediction logic.Where as the x86 instruction set has no concept of branch hinting or predication.
Conclusion
Remember the days of 1980-81....that was the time when IBM lost its ground to the PC clone makers. What they did is they understood they will loose the fight so they left the ring ,went home and joined another sport called PS\2.But the world didnt switch to their platforms and went with PC.IBM never regained it's position that once they had.May be the history will repeate itself. But who will be the PS/2 of future,IA64 or x86,only time will tell !!!
